Workshop on Developing Youth Competencies for Safe and Responsible Digital Engagement

Overview
A two-day workshop titled “Developing Youth Competencies for Safe and Responsible Digital Engagement” was held at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on 17–18 April 2026. The programme brought together academics, researchers, and students to explore the skills and competencies required for young people to engage with the digital environment safely, critically, and responsibly.
The workshop was organized by the Election Lab, Department of Political Studies, SUST, together with the ULAB Centre for Critical and Qualitative Studies (CQS) and Fact Watch, with support from UNESCO.
Workshop Focus
The programme addressed the challenges young people face in navigating an increasingly complex digital environment, including the rapid circulation of information and the challenges posed by misinformation.
The opening session highlighted the importance of developing young people's ability to evaluate information critically, engage responsibly with digital platforms, and participate constructively in the digital ecosystem.
The workshop combined presentations, discussions, training sessions, and interactive activities. Participants were introduced to different dimensions of safe and responsible digital engagement, with an emphasis on critical evaluation of information and responsible participation.
Opening Session
The inaugural session was attended by SUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. AM Sarwaruddin Chowdhury as chief guest. Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Md Shajedul Karim and Treasurer Prof. Md Ismail Hossain also attended.
The session was chaired by Prof. Md Nazrul Islam, Head (in-charge) of the Department of Political Studies. Prof. Md Shahabul Haque, Director of the Election Lab, opened the programme, while Prof. Zayeda Sharmin, Deputy Director of the Election Lab, delivered the welcome remarks.
UNESCO project lead Shakil Foysal and Md Riaz Uddin Khan of ULAB introduced the programme. Noor Hasnat Emon presented an overview of the Election Lab's previous activities.
